Fast forward, 21 years…1988. I had been pitching a major prospect for over a year. I finally had earned the opportunity to sit in front of John, CEO of this $100,000,000 company. The whole experience is too much to write about here but let me share one thing that stands out in my mind. There was a blackboard behind John and scrawled across the top of the board in his own hastily drawn block letters were the words "$250,000,000 No Debt- 12/89." I knew why he had written it on the blackboard but I asked him what that meant to him anyhow. "A very big goal needs a place to breathe… a place to be seen, a place to live. It is with me all of the time and I see it whenever I walk into my office!"
John hit his goal and every year he changed the numbers on his blackboard. The last time I was in his office, about 10 years ago, the number was "One Billion Dollars- No Debt!" He reached that mark, too!
Back to the Porsche. It was 1996, and Carol, the cleaning woman in my office building, was working in my office late one evening. "Mr. David," she said, "Look out the window." I could see that she was very excited to so I stood up and joined her. She pointed with amazement to my new Black Porsche 911 sitting 20 feet away. "Mr. David, Mr. David, that's the exact car from the bathroom wall." And it was. The picture of the Porsche had lived in my mind and had lived on my wall for years and now it was here. "It is like you dreamed it," she said. And, yes I had.
Carol went home that night and started cutting out pictures of her ideal life from magazines and pasted them into her "dream" book. I don't know how many, if any, of her dreams were realized but I bet she enjoys looking at that book.
Put your goals where you can see them everyday!
